How Often Should You Do EMS Training? Scheduling and Recovery

An EMS schedule should be based on your suitability, experience and recovery, not simply on how many appointments a package allows. Discuss the plan with an appropriately qualified EMS coach before starting or increasing your sessions.

What published guidance says

The 2023 international expert guideline for non-medical whole-body EMS recommends a gradual familiarisation period, initially limiting training to once weekly. It also recommends at least four days between intense sessions after the conditioning phase. These are general expert recommendations, not an individual prescription.

The guideline emphasises health screening, qualified in-person supervision and communication between coach and participant. Ask a clinician about suitability if you have a health condition or uncertainty about whether EMS is appropriate for you.

Questions to discuss with your coach

Explain your previous EMS experience, other exercise and goals. Ask how intensity and session length will be introduced, how recovery will be assessed and when the schedule should be reviewed. Do not increase frequency just because an appointment is available.
